Comic Relief is brilliant at galvanising a nation of comedy lovers to be generous for good causes. The BBC’s fundraising show this year culminated with a snapshot look at the characters of Love Actually thirteen years on from the release of the movie. The comedy sketch ends with Hugh Grant’s character giving a press conference as the reelected Prime Minister answering the question “Is he confident about the future?” His answer is a guarded “yes” and he finishes his speech with the quote “good will win”.
How do we know good will win? Because good has already won! “Death has been swallowed up in victory” says the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:54, Jesus says “It is finished” on the cross and the crowds shout “hallelujah” in heaven. Jesus’ victory on the cross frees us up to be generous because faith in Jesus breaks our lust for more power, more stuff and more pleasure. Faith in Jesus brings peace and contentment and so faith in Jesus frees us up to be generous. Just like God is generous, He gave all He had to set us free (Romans 8:32). And what makes God so generous? … Love actually. God is Love (1 John 4:16)
