Sitting with Jesus: In Friendship
Read: John 15:14-15
“You are my friends if you do what I command.” (v14)
“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his Master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from My Father I have made known to you.” (v15)
Sitting with Jesus: In Friendship…..
We need to note what this does not mean:-
- Jesus is ‘my pal in my pocket!’
- Jesus gives us instant access to a ‘Sugar Daddy’ in Heaven
- We are becoming Robots – Artificial Intelligence full of data.
Jesus came to this earth – “being made in appearance as a man.” (Phil 2:7b-8a) “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His Glory, The Glory of The One and only Son, who came for The Father, full of Grace and Truth.”
Jesus gives us an invitation to be His friend.
This does not detract from Jesus – The Saviour, The Lord, The Master, The King, The One worthy of our worship, praise and adoration. But, like Abraham, (James 2:23b) “Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as Righteousness and he was called God’s Friend!” So can we.
Sitting with Jesus: In Friendship
What a wonderful thought we are called God’s Friend by Jesus: “You are My Friend!”
The Qualifications are Obedience and Discipleship.
Obedience: “If you do what I command!” (John 15:14)
Discipleship: “For every that I learned from My Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15)
May Bank Holiday 1989, Jill and I were travelling on the M6 Motorway. Going past the Blackpool turning the traffic in all four lanes became stop/start. We were in the outside lane, because I didn’t want to get caught up in the traffic. We accelerated away, then braked sharply – as I looked in my rear view mirror I saw a coach approaching us very fast. I told Jill, “Brace yourself we are going to be hit!” At the last minute the coach took evasive action – hit our rear passenger side wheel clean off – that went bouncing down the motorway. The coach ploughed into vehicles in the other lanes. The tachograph revealed that the driver was doing 50 mph at impact….. we got out of the car…. A policeman came to me and said, “You might like to see this.” He had my Bible, open, saying that, “this is how I found it on the motorway tarmac. Underlined was the verse Proverbs 18:24b “There is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother!.” The policeman said, “I think that He was with you today!!”
This has been a challenging message to prepare on so many levels. I confess that there have been times, I’ve fallen out with Jesus! I’ve misunderstood His reasoning! “His thoughts are not always my thoughts, now His ways, my ways!”
I am a Pastor of His. I love my calling. I am committed to move in that anointing and serve His people. “To feed His sheep, To feed His lambs, To take care of His sheep. To follow Him (John 21:15a – 19) There have been times when He has asked me to “Stretch out my hands, let someone else dress me and lead me where I do not want to go.” There are times of self death… Interestingly at the point of my “death to self” that is when, and where, Jesus’ Resurrection Life is displayed in peoples’ lives and situations.
The greatest calling we have is to Be A Friend of Jesus. To Sit With Him.
Sitting With Jesus: In Friendship – We have companionship through life
“There is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24b)
“Surely I AM with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20b)
“Never will I leave you; Never will I forsake you… So we can say with confidence, The Lord is my Helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:5b – 8)
Sitting With Jesus: In Friendship – We have conversation in all situations
Jesus is The Living Word. “Sharper than a double edged sword. His Word is alive and active, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
The Word of God tells us Pray Continually (I Thessalonians 5:17) This involves us talking and listening. Talking – sharing our burdens and hearing the burdens of The Lord Jesus – Listening.
“Lord Jesus, may the things that break your heart break my heart.”
Contemplation This is not always something that comes naturally – “Be still and know that I AM God!” (Psalm 46:10)
Confidence What an honour this is, when Jesus shares His Special, Prophetic insight with us. (Amos 3:7) “Surely The Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plan to His Servants the prophets. Let’s not get defensive saying, “I’m not a prophet, in a prophetic office.” (Joel 2:28) “I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophecy, your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions.”
What an honour it is to be a confidante of Jesus!
Sitting With Jesus: In Friendship: He Confronts us!
(Psalm 141:5) “Let a Righteous man strike me – that is a kindness; Let him rebuke me – that is oil on my head.”
(Proverbs 27:6) “Faithful are the wounds of a Friend!” (AV) He uses His Word (2 Timothy 3:16) “All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in Righteousness. (v17) “So that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Sitting With Jesus: In Friendship: Through All Circumstances!
“But now, this is what The Lords says – He who created you, Jacob, He who formed you, Israel, Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” (Isaiah 43:2)
Jesus is our Great High Priest who has ascended into Heaven. We sit with Him in heavenly places (Hebrews 4:15) “We do not have a High Priest who is unable to empathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet did not sin.
Sitting With Jesus: In Friendship: We become a Contributor
We, because of friendship with Jesus, are salt and light, to our world. We are His hands and feet expressing His love. I’m inspired by Acts 10:38, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with The Holy Spirit and power, and how He went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with Him.”
(John 15:16a) “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit – fruit that will last.”
Sitting With Jesus: In Friendship: We take Communion
(I Corinthians 11:26a) “Proclaim The Lord’s death until He comes.”
“The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance (looking back). In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, This cup is the New Covenant in My blood, do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me (present). For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim The Lord’s death until He comes.” (future).
Sitting With Jesus: In Friendship – Continuously
All my other points begin with ‘C’. I wanted to say that we sit with Jesus for all Eternity. So I looked up the word ‘Eternal’ in the Thesaurus and the word Continuously was listed.
This world is not our Eternal Home. Paul writes (Philippians 3:20-21). “But our citizenship is in Heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there; The Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body.”
Conclusion: Let’s be doers of The Word, not just hearers and, if we haven’t already, start: “Sitting With Jesus – In Friendship.”
