Have you ever wondered what it must have been like to bring up Jesus, The Messiah, as His Parents?!
N.B. There is no perfect Human Parent!
One day chatting with Abbie, my daughter, I said “Abbie, sorry I’ve messed up at times, as a parent. The thing is Abbie, you don’t get a practice run at it!”
In Mary & Joseph’s case Jesus is The One fulfilling the Prophet Isaiah’s statement (Isaiah 11:6b) “A little child shall lead them!” Though I suspect at times we have all experienced that as we have seen and heard ‘the situation’ from a child’s perspective.
But they, Mary & Joseph, needed to parent Jesus, that was their calling.
- Mary breast fed Jesus.
- They taught Jesus to talk.
- They watched Jesus take His first steps.
- They picked Jesus up after a fall to the ground.
- Joseph taught Jesus carpentry – this is proof of Jesus laying down His advantages pre-conception because (John 1:3) tells us, “Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.” Dad, Joseph, guided Jesus’ hands in carpentruy and, in no doubt many other ways.
Jesus’ Parents: were an example to Jesus
(Luke 2:41) “Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for The Festival of Passover.”
(v42) “When He was 12 years old, they went up to The Festival, according to the custom.”
According to Jewish law every male Jew was meant to attend 3 Annual Festivals in Jerusalem each year. However, with the Jews scattered throughout the Roman Empire, most went once per year.
The women were not required to go, but often did.
The Feast of Passover was a 7 day event celebrating the deliverance of Israel from Egypt…. This was an expensive trip. Jesus’ parents made this a priority.
Jesus’ Parents: were educators of Jesus
They brought Jesus up in “The ways of The Lord.”
(Proverbs 22:6) “Train a child up in the way he should go (and in keeping with his individual gift or best), and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
“The gift and call of God are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29).
(Ephesians 6:4) “Father’s do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of The Lord.”
They knew that in one years’ time Jesus would be a fully fledged adult and would celebrate His Bar Mitzvah – becoming responsible for Himself.
Jesus’ Parents: Shared Jesus with the extended family
In the West we would probably read v43, thinking to ourselves that if we were returning from holiday we would notice if “someone” who should have been in the car, or on the bus, was not there – wouldn’t we?!
(v43) “After The Festival was over, while His parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it!”
However, Jesus’ parents – shared Jesus with the extended family. Praise The Lord for extended families!
- For Mums, Dads, Grandparents gifted us by The Lord (Physical and Spiritual).
- For Brothers and Sisters (Physical and Spiritual).
- Adopted ‘Uncles’ and ‘Aunties’.
In Middle Eastern Culture the Extended Family situation meant that Jesus’ Parents were, initially quite relaxed. (v44) “Thinking He was in their company, they travelled on for a day…. Then they began looking for Him among their relatives and friends.”…. (v45) “When they did not find Him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for Him.”
It was bad enough losing Abbie in a shop for a few minutes. I cannot imagine what Mary & Joseph went through during the 3 days of searching for Him.
Jesus’ Parents: were enlightened by Jesus
(v46-50) “After 3 days they found Him in The Temple Courts, sitting among The Teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard Him was amazed at His understanding and His answers. When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. His mother said to Him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your Father and I have been anxiously searching for You.” Jesus’ reply, “Why were you searching for Me?” He asked, “Don’t you know I had to be in My Father’s House/about My Father’s business?”
The reality is that, initially, Mary & Joseph – Jesus’ mum and dad did not fully understand….. They needed to grow more into The Knowledge & Grace of Jesus – just like we do…. Having enlightened them (v51) “Then He went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them.”
Jesus’ Parents: embraced Jesus and His calling
This is not always easy for a parent – It is one thing to dedicate our children to The Lord. It takes Faith, Love, Hope & Trust, to let The Lord lead them into The Fulness of His Calling upon their lives. Whilst at the same time maintaining a Correct and Meaningful sense of responsibility.
The Result: Jesus’ Parents: enabled Jesus’ personal growth
(v52) “And Jesus grew in Wisdom and Stature, and in Favour with God and man.”
Conclusion: – An Aside
Sitting With Jesus: His Mum Mary
Mary lived by a ‘Principle For Life’. When the Bible tells us something twice it means that it is really important:-
- After the visit of the Shepherds: (Luke 2:19) “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”
- After the experience with Jesus at The Temple: (Luke 2:51b) “His mother treasured all these things in her heart.”
Mary: ‘Treasured Up’
‘Things in her Heart.’
That enabled her personal growth and enabled her to be the parent she needed to be for Jesus, and his siblings.
